Canmore Canada Cup MTB XC Race 2023 @ Canmore Nordic Centre (Alberta Cup XCO)

Saturday June 17th, I finished 10th place out of 10 in Expert Men category Results. It took me 1 hour & 14 minutes to complete 3 laps and a total of 13 km's long. The total Elevation gain was 1,230 feet. My average heart rate was 181 bpm and max was 193 bpm. I finished -2 laps because it was five laps total.

This was my first MTB race in four years. My mom came to watch & cheer me on and it gave me a huge boost of energy that I would not have had. The course was very technical with black and blue trails. There was lots of shorter really steep climbs and overall lots of climbing. There was no really long climbs. There were a couple of black diamond down hill sections that a couple I could ride and a couple I had to jump off and run down a tiny bit.  I had lots of fun.

The temperature was deg 20 C. I would like to thank all the volunteers and ANMBRA for putting on the race. My mom took the videos and 3 pictures and the other 3 pictures were from https://www.codyshimizu.com/clients

XC Skiing Race 2023 @ Gold Bar Park (Alberta Cup) #1

Saturday January 21st, I finished 12th place out of 12 in the Masters Men 3 & 4 category (Age 40-49)  Results earned 22 Alberta Cup points. It took me 1 hour & 40 minutes and it was four laps for a total of 15 kms. Average heart rate =138 Max =151 (my watch twisted a bit so I know that my heart rate was much higher because I was at threshold the entire race) The total elevation gain was 948 feet.

Today's race was Classic style. The course was very fun and also pretty challenging with lots of hills to climb up. My Mom came and cheered me on while taking pictures and it gave me a boost of energy that I would not have had. I absorbed the great atmosphere and fed off the positive energy. I am extremely proud of myself for not giving up and finishing the race because no one can ever take that away from me.

A huge thanks to Edmonton Nordic and all the volunteers for putting on the race.

November 2014/2015 Non Contact Hockey League

Sat 29th, (Game #13) 1 Goal
@ 10:45pm, Terwillegar Arena Rangers vs. Admirals (L 5-2) For my goal Javan M made a nice drop pass to me close to the blue line and I took a quick wrist shot and it hit off their defence men and went in. They have two really good skating defence men and they made a big difference in the game. We had stretches where we carried the play in their zone. Both goalies were good. Javan M 2A. Ryan S 1G. James S 1A.

Wed 19th, (Game #12) 1 Assist
@ 10:45pm, Kinsmen Arena Rangers vs. Puckaneers (L 4-1) My assist Javan M sent the puck in between the defence men and I got through and took a shot on the goalie and then dove over top of him and Javan M got the rebound with a wide open net. Last game against this team we won 11-1. This game was a lot different as they played way better. I'm not sure if they had different players for this game. Scott I made some good saves in the first period and that I think calmed us down a bit. We just were not in sink tonight but we did bring effort.

Thu 13th, (Game #11) 3 Assists
@ 10:45pm, Castle Downs Arena Rangers vs. Wolverines II (L 5-3) My first assist I stole the puck away from their player in my own zone and poked it free to Ryan S who then got it over to Bruce C who scored. My second assist I had the puck in my own zone and I skated out with it to our blue line and I passed it up to Jason L who took a good shot. My third assist I carried the puck in behind their net and passed it out in front to Cam B. We went down 4-0 early in the game. We battled back hard and found ourselves trailing 4-3 after the second period. In the end they just capitalized on their chances better than we did in the third period. Bruce C 1G & 1A.

Wed 12th, (Game #10) 1 Assist
@ 10:45pm, Kinsmen Arena Rangers vs. Voodoo (W 12-1) For my assist I lost the puck in their zone and it went to the trailing Javan M who shot it in. Tonight we out played and skated them. They only had six shots according to our goalie and I think we had well over forty shots. Javan M 2G. Dallas H 2G. James S 2G & 2A. Jason L 2G. Ryan S 1G & 1A. Cam B 1G & 2A. Blaise F 3A. Rob S 1G & 2A.

Wed 5th, (Game #9) 2 Goals
@ 10:45pm, Kinsmen Arena Rangers vs. Bandits (W 8-5) My first goal I got a pass from Alex H at centre ice, I skated in with it to the corner and walked out in front of the net, I had a player open in front so I faked the pass and the goalie moved off the post so then I took a quick shot. My second goal I was behind the net and I was trying to pass it out front and it hit their goalie's skate and went in. The first couple minutes we started slow and Mike G held us in with big saves. Then we got our game going. We got a lot of down low play in their zone and we also had some good chances off the rush. My favorite part of the game was the win and seeing our captain Harry A score his second ever goal and in back to back games. Ryan S 3G & 2A. Javan M 2G & 2A. James S 4A.

April 2013/2014 Non Contact Hockey League (Play-Offs)

Tues 1st, (Game #1) 1 Assist
@ 6:15pm, Terwillegar Arena Rangers vs. Ghostbusters (L 6-2) I got my assist as I stole the puck along the boards I chipped it out along the boards just past their defence men and was on a two on one, I took a hard shot low blocker side and the goalie fumbled it and Javan was there to get the rebound and score. In the first period we were skating with them and keeping the game close. We had a not so good second period and had a few lapses in our d zone. We came out with a better effort in the third period, I guess we emptied the tank. Tonight we did not lose due to lack of effort. Dallas H 1G. Leonard L hard fore checking. Chris R was skating so hard he took out the net. I would like to thank my mom for coming out to the game to cheer the team on.

January 2013/2014 Non Contact Hockey League

Wed 29th, (Game #19) 1 Assist
@ 10:45pm, Terwillegar Arena Rangers vs. Voodoo (T 2-2) My assist I got the puck at centre ice from a James S pass and then I made a toe drag "N" dangle move to get around their defence men and I took a shot and Javan M was there to burry the rebound. This game was so evenly matched. Both teams had some good scoring chances and both goalies made some really good saves. In the shoot out Javan M hit the post, Chris R got stopped on his shot, and I had the goalie beat but the puck bounced on me. First star Javan M 1G. second star Dallas H 1G. Third star Myself.

Sat 25th, (Game #18)
@ 10:45pm, Terwillegar Arena Rangers vs. Whos Your Daddy (L 5-2) They came out hard in the first period. They have a lot of really good skaters and for sure out played us. I like that we fought back and played a stronger second and third period. First star Cameron B 1G & 1A lots of hard for checking. Second star Blaise F 1G good back checking as well as offence. Third star Jeff M had some good scoring chances.

Mon 13th, (Game #17) 2 Assists
@ 10:45pm, Terwillegar Arena Rangers vs. Ghostbusters (W 6-4) My first assist I won the face-off and Javan M got it to James S who shot it and got the rebound and then passed it to Javan M and he scored. My second assist I won the face-off & Javan M passed it to Dallas H shot from the point went it. I had a bad cold but played through it. This was a very fast paced game as both teams had some really strong skaters. It was a fun game to play in. First star Dallas H 3G playing defence. Second star Taylor W 1G & 1A created lots. Third star Javan M 1G & 1A.

Sat 11th, (Game #16) 1 Goal
@ 10:45pm, Terwillegar Arena Rangers vs. Ice Kings (L 4-2) I scored as our defense chipped the puck out and I picked it up along the boards with speed then I went inside out on their defence men and I toe dragged it around him and took a hard shot. We got out played tonight. I thought we played a little bit better in the second and third periods. They seemed to be first on loose pucks. First star Scott I kept us in all night making save after save. Second star myself only two centre's gave me a lot of skating. Third star Bartek J 1G and won battles along the boards.

Sat 4th, (Game #15)
@ 10:45pm, Terwillegar Arena Rangers vs. Senators (L 6-2) We lost to the better team tonight and they had there one defence men score a hat trick and their goalie was very good making some unbelievable saves. We had a lot of chances to score more but hit posts or just missed. I felt that we skated with them and considering we are div #8 and they are div #6 we faired ok. First star Jeff L 1G. Second star Dallas H 1G. Third star Chris R 1A and looked poise to score his first goal of the season but made a play to get his assist.

September 2013/2014 Non Contact Hockey League

Sat 28th, (Game #3)
@ 11:00pm, Terwillegar Arena Rangers vs. Venom (L 4-1) The score does not show how close the game was. At times we had pressure but were unable to score more goals. They seemed to be good on the rush and carry it into our zone. I blocked two shots and one was off the side of the ankle and it was bleeding. Thanks to Martin P for coming out to watch. First star Steven W had the goal. Second star Jared S had some great dekes including a shot off the post. Third star Scott I for keeping the score close.

Sat 21st, (Game #2) 1 Goal & 1 Assist
@ 11:00pm, Terwillegar Arena Rangers vs. Crusaders (W 8-2) My goal was a PPG James S passed it to Javan M and he left it for me so I went around the defence men and got my own rebound. My assist was a cycle play down low to Javan M who passed it to James S for the one time goal. I blocked two shots and also turned the puck over on their first goal. All of our forward lines had cycle time in their zone. Our Defence and goal tending was good. First star James S 2G & 2A. Second star Javan M 4A. Third star myself.

Sat 14th, (Game #1)
@ 11:00pm, Terwillegar Arena Rangers vs. Mustangs (L6-0) They out played us and beat us to a lot of the loose pucks and seemed to be just half a step faster. We played a much better second and third period. They have six players from my team last years Garbage Goals. I had a break away but got stopped. First star Scott I kept us in after the first period. Second star Javan M, he had chances including a break away. Third star Blaise F played hard.

Perogy Provincials MTB XC Race 2013 @ SunRidge Ski Hill (Alberta Cup) #3

Sunday July 7th, I finished 21st out of 22 in Sport Men Results It was three laps and 19 km's in total. It took me 1hr 54mins. My Average heart rate was 179 and max was 195. The total elevation gain was 2,287 feet. Today I did a small light spin in an easy gear for warm up. The mass start of today's race with all the category's, I was not ready for as I eased into the last place spot, it was from there I moved up a few spots (most in other category's) as I got more comfortable. I climbed up all the climbs today except two short steep ones in one spot of the climb, my highlight of my climbing was, I was even with Olympian Tara W on the big wide dirt hill and I got up ahead of her before the crest and then she passed me just before the top by two seconds according to my parents who took pics at the top. The last lap with about four km's to go it started to rain hard and I was sliding around and lost some time that I had gained on the climbing. I love the 29er on this course, I was clipped in and made it up climbs I have never done before. The temperature was 22 deg C. I want to say a big thanks to my parents for coming out to support me today & Kirk H and pedal head for putting on the race & all the volunteers for their help.

Hammer Nutrition Missoula MTB XC Race 2013 @ Montana (USA Pro XCT) #1

Saturday June 22nd, I finished 23rd place out of 23 in Cat 2 (that's Canada's Sport) results. It took me 1hr 40mins. It was three laps long for a total of 14 Kms. The total Elevation gain was 2,434 feet. I earned 590 place points. One word to describe the course would be ''wow'' nothing like that at home. This is my fourth season of racing and this was the most difficult XC race I have done thus far. I could take a little bit of Canmore and Hinton to compare some of it. I remember hearing the announcer saying this course will test your climbing ability, your fitness, and your technical riding skills, he also said if your not good in one area you won't do well, (me not great at technical) I am glad they let me finish the race (as I was under one minute before the time cut for lap #2) to post a time, It let me feel that proud moment of finishing the race. The winner was done in under an hour and I have to say the local Montana racers have the comfort level on this course and are used to breathing at this elevation, it was impressive to watch and there were some accomplished road racers in the field. It felt like the racers were faster than Canada's sport field. I had a really good second lap and pulled in more than six minutes compared to my first lap. I stayed in my clips for most of the race except for one really steep switch back with a log drop so I un clipped and bounced off the trail and wiped out sliding down the mountain on lap two, thank fully I was ok, just shook up. The race was held at Marshall Mountain and the temperature was 22 deg C. A huge thanks to USA Cycling and all the volunteers for putting on the race. There was a BBQ after the Men Elite race at 6:00pm with hot dogs, pork, ribs and beer and pop. Then a live band was on stage, it was a great way to celebrate the day. I got a chance to say hello to Geoff K and Derek Z the Canadian pro racers of Scott racing team, also really cool people.

Saturday Dec 1, @ 10:00, Callingwood Arena Garbage Goals vs. Gongshow (W 9-3) My first two assists were passes to Javin M with the goals. 2010 Mountain bike XC Racing Season Recap

Alberta cup Mountain XC went as follows out of six races

  1. Perogy in Edmonton,  May 16 = 38 out of 40
  2. Bacon in Stony Plain,  May 23 = 25 out of 29
  3. Summer Solstice in Bragg Creek, June 20 = 21 out of 25
  4. Canada Cup in Edmonton, July 11 = 36 out of 52
  5. Nationals in Canmore, July 18 = 7 out of 10 = ( 4 points )
  6. Provincials in Hinton, Aug 28 = 7 out of 10 = ( 6 points )

I finished with 10 Alberta Mountain bike cup points and was ranked 23rd out of 136 in Novice. All theese results can be found @  http://www.albertabicycle.ab.ca/ and results from Nationals @ http://www.zone4.ca/results

The 2010 season was my first ever and I learned quick if you do not train for a race, well then you will not do well, however in my early struggles I enjoyed what I was doing. I also realized that I had not trained in the winter and that made me have a slow start. I joined the River Valley Cycle racing team and was doing group rides with them on Monday nights. I participated in a spring series race and finished dead last. I raced in 7 Fat Tire Tuesday races and did not do good in the three lap catagories, I did three two lap races and came in second twice.

For most of the spring and summer I was riding my bike/training 3 to 4 times a week.
I really started doing better during the Bragg Creek Summer Solstice race and continued to get faster from there. My best race was the last of the season in Hinton AB for provincials, I felt strong and my technical riding was the best I have ever done. I felt like a slithering snake lol. I went a total of 1,260 km's training and racing on the road and trails.

Pic #1 is from the Perogy. Pic #2, #3 and #4 is from the Edmonton Canada cup race. (The rest are from Nationals at Canmore Nordic Centre) and were taken by Martin P.
